The Red Sea is one of the most spectacular underwater destinations in the world. Crystal-clear waters, pristine coral reefs and extraordinary biodiversity make Egypt the ideal destination for both experienced divers and beginners. Here is our complete guide.
Why dive in the Red Sea
The warm waters (24–29°C) and visibility that often exceeds 30 metres offer perfect conditions all year round. The reefs are home to over 1,200 species of fish and hundreds of types of coral.
The best dive sites
Sharm el-Sheikh and Ras Mohammed Park
Ras Mohammed is one of the most famous nature reserves in the world, with sheer coral walls and incredible marine life. From Sharm you can also reach the Strait of Tiran, with its four legendary reefs.
Dahab and the Blue Hole
The Blue Hole in Dahab is an iconic site: an underwater sinkhole over 100 metres deep. Also excellent for snorkelling along the edge of the reef.
Hurghada and the Giftun Islands
From Hurghada, excursions head to the Giftun Islands, perfect for snorkelling and gentle dives, ideal for families and beginners.
Marsa Alam and its treasures
Marsa Alam is a paradise for enthusiasts: here you can encounter dugongs, turtles and, at the Elphinstone and Brothers Islands sites, even sharks and mantas.
Snorkelling for everyone
You do not need to be a certified diver to enjoy the Red Sea. Many reefs are accessible directly from the shore or with short boat trips, perfect for family snorkelling.
When to go
Diving is possible all year round. The months from March to May and from September to November offer the best balance between water temperature and tourist crowds. To spot the sharks at the Brothers, the best time is summer.
Practical tips
- Choose a PADI- or SSI-certified diving centre.
- If you are a beginner, take an introductory course (Discover Scuba Diving).
- Never touch the corals: they are fragile and protected.
- Bring a 3 mm wetsuit even in summer for deeper dives.
