The White Desert (Sahara el-Beyda) is one of the most surreal landscapes on the planet. Its wind-sculpted white chalk formations create natural sculptures that seem to come from another world. Here is how to experience this unforgettable adventure.
What is the White Desert
Located in the Egyptian Western Desert, near the oasis of Farafra, the White Desert is a national park famous for its dazzlingly white limestone rocks, shaped into forms that recall mushrooms, animals and fantastic creatures.
How to get there
The starting point is usually the Bahariya oasis, reachable in about 4–5 hours by car from Cairo. From here, 4x4 off-road tours with a local guide set off.
What to see
- The mushroom formations: white rocks sculpted by the wind
- Crystal Mountain: a hill of sparkling quartz
- The Black Valley (Black Desert): a perfect contrast with its volcanic hills
- The Bahariya oasis: hot springs and palm groves
Camping under the stars
The must-do experience is overnight camping in the desert. After sunset, the Bedouin guides prepare a traditional dinner around the fire. The starry sky, far from any light pollution, is simply spectacular. You will often spot desert foxes (fennecs).
When to go
The best time runs from October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant. Nights can be very cold, so bring warm clothes even if it is hot during the day.
What to pack
- Sleeping bag or warm clothes for the night
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Closed, comfortable shoes
- Torch and power bank
- Enough water
Practical tips
- Always rely on experienced Bedouin guides and organised tours.
- Book a 2-day/1-night tour to enjoy the camping.
- Respect the environment: do not leave litter in the desert.
- Combine the visit with the Siwa or Bahariya oasis.
