1. The Pyramids of Giza

The absolute symbol of Egypt, the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure rise on the outskirts of Cairo. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. Do not miss the evening sound and light show.

2. The Great Sphinx

A few steps from the pyramids, the Sphinx of Giza has watched over the plateau for more than 4,500 years. With the body of a lion and a human face, it remains one of the most enigmatic monuments in the world.

3. The Valley of the Kings in Luxor

On the west bank of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings houses the tombs of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, including the famous tomb of Tutankhamun. The colourful frescoes are incredibly well preserved.

4. The Temple of Karnak

The largest temple complex of ancient Egypt, the Temple of Karnak amazes with its hypostyle hall of 134 gigantic columns. A breathtaking place.

5. Abu Simbel

The two rock temples of Abu Simbel, commissioned by Ramesses II, were moved stone by stone in the 1960s to save them from the waters of Lake Nasser. The four colossal statues at the entrance are unforgettable.

6. The Temple of Philae

Dedicated to the goddess Isis, the Temple of Philae stands on an island near Aswan and is reached by boat. The atmosphere is magical, especially at sunset.

7. The Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum

The new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza is the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation, with the complete treasure of Tutankhamun.

8. The Cairo Citadel

The Citadel of Saladin dominates Cairo with the splendid alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali. From the terrace you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

9. The Temple of Hatshepsut

The mortuary temple of the queen-pharaoh Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is a masterpiece of terraced architecture set into the rock.

10. The Temple of Edfu

Dedicated to the god Horus, the Temple of Edfu is one of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt and a classic stop on Nile cruises.

How to organise the visit

Most of these monuments can be visited by combining a stay in Cairo with a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. For the southern monuments such as Abu Simbel, consider a dedicated day excursion.
