Cairo is a paradise for street food lovers. Among crowded alleys and steaming stalls, the Egyptian capital offers authentic flavours at very low prices. Here are the dishes you absolutely must try.
Koshari: the national dish
Koshari is the king of Egyptian street food: a mix of rice, lentils, pasta and chickpeas, topped with a spiced tomato sauce and crispy fried onion. Cheap, vegetarian and incredibly filling.
Ful and Ta'meya
Ful medames (fava beans stewed with oil, lemon and spices) is the traditional breakfast of Egyptians. Ta'meya is the Egyptian version of falafel, made with fava beans instead of chickpeas and even softer inside.
Hawawshi
A kind of spiced meat sandwich baked in the oven: hawawshi is minced meat with onions, chilli and spices, enclosed in bread and baked until crispy.
Shawarma and Kebab
Egyptian shawarma, chicken or beef, is served in bread with tahini and vegetables. In markets such as Khan el-Khalili you will also find excellent kebab skewers grilled to order.
Sweets to try
- Basbousa: a semolina cake soaked in syrup
- Om Ali: a warm pudding of puff pastry, milk and dried fruit
- Konafa: crispy stringy pastry with nuts or cream
What to drink
Accompany your meal with a karkadè (hibiscus infusion, excellent cold) or a traditional mint tea. Do not miss the winter sahlab, a warm and creamy drink.
Practical tips
